Untitled (Gravity)

Eliot Bessot | 2023 | 07:11

«„Untitled(Gravity)“ is a looping video that displays various figures moving through the air. Created using one of the earliest models of text-to-video technology powered by artificial intelligence, this work acts as an intermediary between technology and a liminal dream world.»

Stratum

Julia Schmelzer | 2023 | 11:31

«The term ‚Anthropocene‘ describes man as the main influencing factor on the biological, geological, and atmospheric processes on earth. (…)
An era in which no longer only humans, but machines, especially those of information processing and artificial intelligence, dominantly influence the Earth system and the human system. In the video, contemplative image sequences encounter moving images from microchips and semiconductor production and geological structures. „Stratum“ deals with memory structures and various questions about which possible accesses to memories will become relevant in the future through technology-based enhancements.»

Training machine for dragonfly

Los Oushi Lin | 2022 | 00:48

«The story background of this work is based on the artist’s world view of „A World Without Birds“.
Out of fear of birds, the artist uses the idea of „how to make birds disappear“ as a starting point to trace back and reconstruct history, creating a world where birds do not exist. In this timeline, the sky niche is occupied by the ferocious predatory insect, the dragonfly.
Due to the lack of competitors and natural enemies, the dragonfly was able to grow freely, and the Meganeura monyi reached a size that could be ridden.
After successfully riding dragonflies for the first time, humans have gradually mastered the method of taming large dragonflies. Through directional selection, a larger riding dragonfly was bred.»

Formal City

Tomotosi | 2019 | 07:05

«April brings a new start in Japan. During the rush to work in downtown Tokyo, I changed my clothes from pajamas into suit. The moment I wore the suit, I felt like I was just getting used to the city.»

— Tomotosi

Public Goals

Tomotosi 2022 | 12:46

«We covered gaps in guardrails and other places that could be used as loopholes with tape, and kept waiting for the moment when someone would open them again (the moment when the goal tape was cut). It is also a microcosm of the communication between the government who wants to correct the failings of the city and the users who are using the city to their detriment. It is dedicated to Tokyo, which was undergoing redevelopment and purification in the wake of the Olympics.»

The Tools of the Kuna

Georg Dahled | 2020 | 13:26

In The Tools of the Kuna, Max Payne, the protagonist of the eponymous game series, gets a break from the frantic shootings and fights he usually has to deal with in order to complete his missions. In Panama, one of the settings of Max Payne 3, he has to pass, among other things, through the exhibition The Tools of the Kuna, which presents tools of an indigenous people of Panama, the Kuna. Instead of pursuing his dangerous mission as determined as possible, the brave Max Payne pauses in this video; he takes the time to contemplate the exhibited objects quietly as well as to study the accompanying exhibition texts thoroughly.

Dahled’s video work juxtaposes the rapid speed at which digital information is usually consumed with the tradition of time-consuming – and sometimes, through the immediate experience, very memorable – visits to exhibitions. For minutes, Max Payne seems to immerse himself in the exhibits, to meticulously read every line of the information texts. While players of the video game do not usually pay attention to this exhibition during the game and are only interested in passing through it rapidly and without injuries, Dahled’s video turns it into the only setting.

The phenomenological limitations of a visit to an exhibition in Max Payne 3, however, quickly become apparent: Although conceptually based on conventional exhibitions in ethnological museums, the exhibits, presented in The Tools of the Kuna, can only be recognized schematically; the informational texts remain indecipherable beyond their headings. Thus, it becomes evident that Dahled’s video The Tools of the Kuna is not primarily concerned with the content of the eponymous exhibition; instead, the focus is on the general modes of reception of exhibitions in the context of digital dissemination of information. Because of the exhibition’s focus on the tools of an indigenous ethnic group in Max Payne 3, however, Dahled’s video offers an interface to the discussion about the modes of presentation in ethnographic museums, which has been going on for several years.

LAMB (History Always Begins With You)

Luka Cvetkovic | 2021 | 03:00:00

«LAMB is a performance project that took place in Kosovo, from 27th of March to 3th of April 2021 (7days; 150km) in which Luka Cvetkovic carried and cared for a lamb from Jarinje (ethnically Serbian village in the North) to Kachanik (Ethnically Albanian village in the south of Kosovo) where it continued living with Albanian-Kosovar farmer. The performance was documented from the lamb’s perspective, as the main idea was to raise the question of a new subjectivity versus pre-existing narratives, concepts, and projections and thus bring into discussion a new, un-politicized, and uncorrupted view in order to gain an understanding of reality, or how reality is performed onto us, respectively. This view can serve as a starting point to think events outside necessity and predictability, outside the need of human subjectification; events that decenter the human subject and offer ways of forming contingently new relations to the being of other. In that way relaxing the time and space from human anthropocentric subjectivity.»

— Luka Cvetkovic

Red Lights

Kaspar Ludwig | 2022 | 03:19

This work is based on the little gestures that people do to take personal space or freedom. They’re maybe little silly actions that are apolitical and don’t apply to a larger scale movement or to any ethnic or philosophy. These actions don’t aim to change society or they don’t wave flags. These are silent individual decisions that happen silently, but that every citizen in some way does. The only limit and the difference is mostly just based on personal morality.
Actions that are not related to the bigger philosophical meaning about anarchy and civil disobedience but still are, in little scale, against the strict rules that our society requires.
Everyday insubordination, silent and invisible (because it flies below the historical radar) does not wave flags, has no officials, writes no manifestos, has no permanent organisation, and evades public attention
– Two cheers for Anarchism, J.C.Scott
This work aims to speak in a playful way about the rule that we have in society, how we take personal space (even in a ridiculous or glimpse way), how sometimes we can play with the grey area, and how the personal perception of morality, ethics and rules or low change the individual behaviour.

Cleaning Sappho

Martina Morger | 2021 | 07:34

Martina is showing their work «Cleaning Sappho», which is part of a broader performative and videographic body of work called «Cleaning Her». It was created in collaboration with Lukas Zerbst.

«For this series, Martina Morger cleaned Sappho, a sculpture by Adelaide Pandiani Maraini, to shine a light on the utterly neglected sculpture. The process of the symbolic cleaning is best described as “spiritual labour” rather than “maintenance work”, as the sculptures were thereby not repaired. The tracing of the objects with the cloth is a bodily experience that goes beyond the visual. The interaction with each sculpture is individual and intimate. The time and care given deliberately to sculptures evokes an engagement with the history of the objects.»

CUT COPY SPHINX

Virginia L. Montgomery | 2018 | 03:30

«CUT COPY SPHINX is a surreal, sculptural short art-film about metaphysics, myth, and destruction.A feminist twist on the classical myth of Oedipus and the Sphinx, CUT COPY SPHINX recasts the sphinx as the uncanny hero who endures ‚cuts‘ across time. Shot en plein aire on a miniature prop-set with a Dewalt drill and a gallon of honey, CUT COPY SPHINX syncs philosophy, feminism, and image theory.»

Untitled

Timo Paris | 2021 | Series of 24 | Total 44:47

«Drawing as a processual act of thinking, as the processing of sensory impressions and as the manual formulation of thoughts is a recurring component of my artistic practice. The continuous shaping of forms and lines with the body, the relation to the ground and the possibilities of aligning the body with it are of crucial interest. This work analogously investigates the development of a movement system with a focus on isolated movements and the rotations around anchor points in model size. Defined parameters serve for a structured improvisation. During the exploration of variation possibilities, several drawings were created, which visualize the changes of the parameters seismographically. These are marked with a stamp in the lower left corner of each drawing, with the individual values for each drawing added by handwriting.»

Forever yours

Maja Zagorska | 2021 | 02:49

«Is grooming a dog into a shape of a butterfly an abuse of power?
Forever Yours is a final product of artistic research on creative pet grooming competitions. The experimental animation explores themes of commodification, consumer cycles, advertising culture and cuteness.
Dominance may be cruel and exploitative, with no hint of affection in it. What it produces is the victim. On the other hand, dominance may be combined with affection, and what it produces is a pet.
How great is the temptation for the powerful to reduce their pets to simulacra of lifeless objects and mechanical toys – to the sort of frozen perfection that only the inanimate can attain.»

— Maja Zagorska

At the Center of the World

Hamza Badran | 2019 | 12:31

«On a school trip to Delphi, we discussed the town as an archaeological site but also as a tourist magnet, its importance in ancient Greece, the Oracle of Delphi, the ancient belief that Delphi is the “center of the world”, and Greece as the birthplace of western democracy. At the Center of the World is a cat film that challenges hegemonic views on the ancient world, the ancient world as a source of pride and reference for different nationalisms. The Cat of Delphi uses the ancient center of the world as a hunting ground, as a place to play, to eat and sleep.»

Luftraum

Dirk Koy | 2019 | 02:46

«In this video you can see parts of Basel, which were filmed by drone in 90 degrees bird’s eye view. These parts of the city were relocated and combined into a permanently changing overall composition. A moving drone video collage that visually explores the interface between the real and virtual worlds.»
